I am a Pediatric Emergency Medicine physician, with many years of experience managing children who have experienced near-drowning events. I have taught pool safety to families, paramedics, and physicians. After recently learning about the high incidence of pet drownings, I decided to purchase a Safety Turtle for my 3 year old, 23 lb cocker-boxer mix. After wearing this device for only 6 weeks, Brendle slipped while running and fell into our pool, here in North Dallas. The 2 young boys who were visiting us and playing catch with Brendle simply froze, not knowing what to do. Within 5 seconds of this accident, the Safety Turtle base station alarmed. We were able to immediately respond to the pool and retrieve our struggling pet from the water. She was unable to pull herself up and out of the water, and did not attempt to find the pool steps, as one might have expected. The Safety Turtle worked as advertised, with a loud and identifiable alarm. Brendle would have fatigued and drowned without this wonderful device.
